From Cheap to Free

You might not look twice at 272 Hoosick St. in Troy, New York. It's nothing more than a simple Rite Aid, a simple drugstore store where you can grab necessities for cheap. Until now, that is. The Albany Business Review reported that the building had been bought by a Vermont based company, but who?

The company is called Free Store Mission Inc., and their idea is simple: Make everything in your store free. Great in concept, sounds like a nightmare in theory. Except, it really isn't too hard to pull off.

How Do You Make a Store Free?

This isn't a marketing ploy, they're really making everything free. Obviously, donations play a massive role in this, and they'll take just about anything. Furniture, TVs/computers, cribs, car seats, encyclopedias, and poor-condition clothing won't be accepted, but everything else is.

The store will be staffed mainly by volunteers, with a few paid employees. They already have a successful store in Bennington, VT that will serve as the blueprint for the larger store in Troy. Customers can take 25 items within the week, regardless of income level. All are welcome. There is no official opening date, but they are aiming for late spring/early summer.

Heartwrenching Look at Beloved Upstate NY Concert Venue Before Demolition

The Starlite Music Theater opened in 1957 and was a popular venue located in Latham. There were many acts that passed through the Starlite until 1997. It was a 3,000-seat theater in the round. In the 1980s, I saw Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go's at the Starlite Music Theater. Kenny Rogers, The Monkees, Weird Al Yankovic, Jonny Cash, Run DMC, Diana Ross, and more graced the stage. The Starlite closed its doors in 1998 and lay dormant for years. Then, in December 2012, the Starlite was demolished. Here are pictures of the venue in the summer of 2012, before it was leveled.
