Costco might be the greatest American invention in history. The idea of "what if we made a supermarket that was insanely cheap and allowed you to buy in bulk" was so genius, that it quickly spread across the country.

The Capital Region is finally expecting our first local store, and it seems their expansion plans aren't done yet...

The Capital Region's First Costco

Okay, so we have to go back a bit, back to March 2025, when ground broke on the first Costco in the region. This was the result of five years of planning, but it's finally coming to fruition.

The site will be next to the Crossgates mall on Western Ave in Guilderland, and they're making fast progress. The store is expected to open in August, and job listings were posted in April of 2026. The goal is to have 150 employees by the time the store opens later this year.

New Land for Costco

It seems that their original plot of land just wasn't enough, because in June of 2025, just three months after breaking ground, they bought property at 1675-1683 Western Ave. for $1.2 Million. This just adds on to the space already reserved for the store, but that wasn't the end of it.

On May 13th, 2026, they made another purchase: A 16.5-acre parcel at 1701 Western Ave. for $15.625 million. It's not clear what these extra parcels of land are for, whether they just needed more space, or if they have something special in store. Regardless of what the extra land turns out to be for, the Capital Region can start getting excited for our very first Costco!
