The Most Mispronounced Towns in the Capital Region (We’re All Guilty)
Say What?
We’re lucky to call Upstate New York home—especially here in the Capital Region, where every town, city, village, and hamlet has its own personality.
But let’s be honest… they also have their own way of being said.
If you’ve lived here your whole life, you’ve probably heard (or said) a few names that make outsiders do a double-take. And even locals don’t always agree on what’s “right.”
Let's Talk About Schoharie and Schaghticoke...
Take Schoharie, for example. Is it “Sko-hair-ee”? “Sko-harry”? Say it wrong in front of the wrong person and you might get a full pronunciation lesson… or be told to go hike Vroman’s Nose.
Then there’s Schaghticoke—a name that feels like a spelling bee final round. Good luck explaining that one to someone from out of town without watching them completely give up halfway through.
And don’t even get us started on Coxsackie—a true Upstate classic that somehow never sounds the way it looks.
