
Deputies Rescue Injured 30-Pound Snapping Turtle in Averill Park

Sadly, the turtle found hurt in Averill Park on Tuesday morning has died. According to CBS 6 News, sheriff’s investigators initially believed the turtle had been struck by a vehicle. However, they now say the injuries appeared to be older and more extensive than originally believed.
Snapping Turtle Rescued After Car Strike
A remarkable turtle rescue is getting plenty of attention in the Capital Region after deputies helped save an injured snapping turtle believed to be nearly 70 years old.
According to the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple spotted the turtle injured along Methodist Farm Road in Averill Park on Wednesday morning and contacted Sheriff Kyle Bourgault for assistance.
Emergency Treatment
Deputies responded and carefully loaded the large snapping turtle into the back of a pickup truck before transporting him to Berkshire County Turtle Rescue Inc. for emergency treatment.

The turtle, now named “Sarge,” weighs about 30 pounds and is believed to have suffered significant injuries after being struck by a vehicle overnight. Rescuers say it appears a vehicle may have passed over the top of him, causing serious trauma.

Officials praised Berkshire County Turtle Rescue for quickly stepping in to help care for Sarge. The rescue operates as a nonprofit and provides care for injured turtles free of charge.
Authorities are also reminding drivers that turtles are especially active this time of year and can easily be injured while crossing roads. If it’s safe, drivers are encouraged to help turtles cross in the direction they were already heading.
