Deputies Remove 78 Animals in Animal Cruelty Case

It just keeps happening...

Another heartbreaking animal cruelty investigation is unfolding in the Capital Region, but thanks to a coordinated rescue effort, dozens of animals are finally getting the care they desperately need.

The Schoharie County Sheriff's Office says deputies removed 78 animals from a property in the Town of Carlisle after responding to a report about the welfare of animals Friday evening.

Puppies Suffered from Severe Conditions

Investigators say they found several puppies suffering from severe medical conditions. Three critically ill puppies were immediately transported to Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Latham for emergency treatment.

When deputies returned the following day alongside the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the Susquehanna SPCA and Carlisle Dog Control, additional puppies were found in critical condition. A search warrant later led to the removal of dozens more animals.

In total, authorities say 17 surrendered puppies, 12 dogs, 9 cats, 31 birds, 5 chickens and 4 horses were removed from the property and are now receiving medical care and evaluations.

The Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley says the community's response has already been overwhelming.

Local Animal Shelter Praises Community Response

After asking for help, the good people in Schoharie County announced it has received enough donated bird cages, but it's still looking for bird food, food and water bowls, cage-mounted holders, perches and toys to help care for more than 30 rescued birds now in its custody.

Donations can be dropped off at 304 Howes Cave Road in Howes Cave.

The Sheriff's Office says the investigation remains active, and no charges have been announced at this time.

Witness Animal Cruelty?

If you witness suspected animal cruelty or believe an animal is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement or an appropriate animal welfare agency.

In 2010, the Albany County Legislature established the Animal Abuser Registry through Local Law K. The registry, managed by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, was created to help protect animals and provide information to the public.

According to the registry, those listed have been convicted of animal cruelty and are prohibited from owning, possessing, residing with, or intentionally having physical contact with an animal.
