
NJ Hiker Who Died on Mount Marcy Identified; Cause of Death Released
Update on Hiker Who Died Climbing Mt. Marcy
Tragic news out of the Adirondacks as officials have released new details about a young hiker who died while climbing Mount Marcy, New York’s highest peak.
New York State Forest Rangers say they were notified around 3 p.m. on February 12 of a hiker and her dog in distress near the summit. Rangers launched an extensive search in extremely difficult winter conditions.
Rangers Make Difficult Climb to Summit
At approximately 9 p.m., crews located Brianna L. Mohr, 21, of Brick, New Jersey, along with her dog. Mohr was showing no signs of life and was pronounced deceased near the summit. Her dog was uninjured and safely rescued.
An autopsy conducted on February 14 at Glens Falls Hospital determined the cause of death to be hypothermia.

According to earlier reports, Mohr had called 911 that afternoon after slipping near the summit and becoming unable to return to the trail. Mount Marcy’s exposed alpine peak, standing at 5,344 feet, is known for brutal winter conditions, including high winds, low visibility, deep snow, and dangerous hidden spruce traps.
Temperatures that day were in the teens, with wind chills near or below zero at higher elevations.
Mourning the Loss of a Loyal Friend
Mohr’s Instagram shows she was an experienced hiker, filled with photos of her and her dog traveling the country in search of new trails and adventures. Our sincerest condolences go out to her family, friends, and community as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.
Friends have begun sharing heartfelt tributes.
One friend wrote that Mohr brought “so much light and joy” into his life and had a gift for filling any room with laughter. He remembered her as a loyal friend who offered comfort during difficult times and said her contagious laugh and love of exploring the world would never be forgotten.
The DEC extended condolences to Mohr’s family and thanked the Forest Rangers and rescue crews who worked through harsh conditions in an effort to reach her.
