(Watch) Viral Couple Share a Meal in the ADK Northway Fast Lane
Fast Food
Nothing screams romantic lunch like exhaust fumes and the soothing sound of tractor-trailers downshifting, but I guess they couldn’t get a table at Exit 9 Stewart’s, so they went with the next-best scenic spot!
A viral video posted by Two Buttons Deep has been making its way around the Capital Region, showing a young couple enjoying a picnic-style lunch on the median of the Northway.
We're not sure what the story is here; the couple's car doesn't appear to be broken down, and they seem to be eating a pretty hearty meal, oblivious to their less-than-stellar surroundings.
While cars and even ambulances whizzed by, the happy couple chowed down on what appeared to be Chinese food and boba tea, complete with tables, chairs, some flowers, and even a stuffed animal as a guest.
The couple appeared to be from out of state, as their illegally parked vehicle showed Connecticut plates, and they didn't seem to have been broken down.
But while this may have just been a harmless stunt for the Gram, there could have been consequences far greater than seasoning your food with Norhtway dust and salt.
Dangerous and Illegal?
Was it legal for them (or anyone else) to be there?
The short answer is no, it is not legal to be a pedestrian on the median of I-87, aka The Northway, or other limited-access highways in New York State.
It doesn't matter how hungry you are or how spectacular the view, setting up a table and chairs on the median of the Northway might sound quirky and fun, but it's pretty sketchy.
New York State law prohibits pedestrians from being on interstate highways, including medians and shoulders, except in emergencies.
Not only could you be fined for trespassing on restricted areas, but you’d also risk charges related to creating a public hazard while you’re putting yourself and drivers at serious risk.
