NWS Confirms Another Twister Touched Down in Upstate New York
Second Twister in New York State this Week
Volatile weather continues to wreak havoc on many towns and villages throughout Upstate New York. For the second time in two days, the National Weather Service confirmed that the damage caused by recent storms was from a tornado.
On Tuesday, news station WPTZ shared a video showing a funnel cloud forming in Beekmantown, New York, about two hours north of Albany.
The National Weather Service confirmed the cloud as a tornado.
The news station reported that based on video evidence by the National Weather Service, the Beekmantown tornado has been rated EF-0, "with a maximum wind speed of 75 mph. It was on the ground for a half-mile with a path width of 100 yards."
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
NWS Confirms Monday's Tornado South of Buffalo
The Beekmantown tornado was the second one to touch down in New York State this week.
On Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado ripped through Ellicottville, a village in western New York, about 45 minutes south of Buffalo.
Sources say Monday's tornado was classified as an EF-1 with wind speeds reaching 110 mph. It tore trees from the ground and snapped power poles in half in its 2.5-mile wake of destruction.
First Responder Shows Aftermath of Storm
A first responder from western New York named Jess Anderson said in a Facebook post that he was one of the first on the scene after the storm ripped through town.
His videos not only showed the sheer destruction but also a tender moment that involved some family pets.
Helpless Kittens Rescued from the Rubble
In one of the videos, Anderson rescues a kitten that appears to be under some rubble, gently placing it near a handful of other desheveled kitties that surely would not have survived had first responders not arrived when they did.
"We think all kittens were saved," he wrote on his Facebook page. "My heart goes out to the amazing couple who lived there. Without a roof on their house, all they cared about was their dog...who was safe inside with them."
In 2024, New York experienced a record-breaking 33 confirmed tornadoes, surpassing the previous 25 set in 1992. The majority of these tornadoes occurred in July, with 16 confirmed during that month alone, also setting a new record for the most tornadoes in a single month, according to the National Weather Service.
