Mini Horse ‘Teddy’ Survives Train Strike in Greene County
Pony Struck by Train
A miniature horse named "Teddy" is lucky to be alive after being struck by a train early Wednesday morning in Greene County.
According to investigators, the incident happened around 5 a.m. on tracks just south of Catskill. Teddy suffered serious injuries, including a fractured vertebra, a broken rib, and a severe cut to his hind leg that required stitches.
"Teddy" is Stable
Despite the trauma, he is now in stable condition and receiving care at Rhinebeck Equine, where he’s expected to remain for several weeks, sources say.
Once he’s strong enough, Teddy will continue what will likely be months of recovery at Unbridled Sanctuary, a local organization known for rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need.

Officials credit Teddy’s survival to fast, coordinated action.
Members of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, including Sergeant Ryan Schrader, Deputy Matthew Monaco, and Deputy Alicia McCourt, worked alongside Susan Kayne and her team from Unbridled Sanctuary to stabilize and transport the injured horse.
Horses Escaped... Likely Not Animal Neglect
Kayne noted that Teddy and another miniature horse, Duke, likely escaped their home, emphasizing that this does not appear to be a neglect case.
Stories like this highlight the critical role local sanctuaries play across the Capital Region and Upstate New York. Whether it’s emergency rescues, neglect cases, or rehabilitation, groups like Unbridled often work side-by-side with law enforcement to give animals a second chance.
In Teddy’s case, that teamwork may have saved his life.
