Heartbreaking Barn Fire in Columbia County
An early morning barn fire in Columbia County had a heartbreaking outcome Monday after three calves were killed in the blaze.
According to the Canaan Protective Fire Company, Columbia County 911 dispatched crews to a reported structure fire on Frisbee Street in Canaan at approximately 4:46 AM on August 24th.
Multiple Fire Departments Were Called to the Scene
Responding firefighters were told that a barn was on fire, and when the first crews arrived, they reported that the approximately 25-by-100-foot building was fully involved, according to the report.
Multiple fire departments from Columbia County and surrounding communities responded to help battle the blaze.
Because of the fire's size, crews requested additional tankers and established a water fill site on Suroiec Road. Crews used three portable ponds to supply water to the scene.

The Town of Canaan Highway Department was also called in with an excavator to remove debris, allowing firefighters to continue working to bring the fire under control.
New York State Police assisted by shutting down Frisbee Street to regular traffic during the response.
Three Calves Lost Their Lives
Sadly, officials say three calves were lost in the fire. Thankfully, no firefighters or civilians were injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Responding departments included Canaan, East Chatham, Red Rock, Lebanon Valley, Richmond, West Stockbridge, North Chatham, Niverville, Spencertown, and Tri-Village, along with Chatham Rescue, Columbia County fire coordinators, State Police, and the Town of Canaan Highway Department.
