Local Parademic Hailed a Hero

On August 24, 2025, while traveling in Germany, John Rudat, from Colonie, was brutally attacked on public transportation after stepping in to save two women from being violently attacked.

Rudat, who sources say was in Germany visiting his former host family, was slashed across the face on Sunday after confronting a man assaulting the women.

He remains hospitalized with serious injuries but managed to share a photo giving a thumbs-up from his hospital bed. Rudat, according to Newschannel 13, is the younger brother of a Schenectady police officer and is currently preparing to become a paramedic.

According to the New York Post, police have now re-arrested a 21-year-old Syrian migrant, saying new evidence ties him to the stabbing.

The Post states that the Syrian man was initially released within hours of the attack, sparking outrage and debate about Germany’s handling of violent crimes involving migrants.
