According to NASA, the Wolf Moon will reach its peak brightness at 5:27 p.m. on Monday, January 13th.  But here’s the good news. You’ll have plenty of time to catch it. The moon will look full for three nights, starting Monday evening and lasting until Wednesday morning. If you’re curious about the exact time the moon rises in your area, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has you covered with specific moonrise times by ZIP code.

So, why is it called the Wolf Moon? This name goes way back to the 1930s, when the Maine Farmers’ Almanac started sharing what it claimed were Native American names for each full moon. January’s moon got its name because, during the cold, snowy winters, people would often hear packs of wolves howling near villages.

The best part about moon-gazing is you don’t need any fancy equipment. Just look up! But if you’re into stargazing, a pair of binoculars or a telescope can give you an even closer view of its craters and details.

And if you’re already excited for the next full moon, mark your calendar. February’s Snow Moon will reach its peak at 8:53 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12th.
