Did You Feel It?

Late Monday night, some folks around Chazy, NY, and both sides of Lake Champlain got a little shake they weren’t expecting.

According to NBC5’s First Warning Weather Team, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake rattled the area around 11:39 PM on Monday.

The quake originated about 8.7 kilometers deep, centered near Chazy, just north of Plattsburgh and west of Alburgh, Vermont.

Residents in towns like Altona, Mooers, and even as far south as Plattsburgh and Burlington reported feeling light tremors, though thankfully, no injuries or damage were reported.

Experts say small earthquakes aren’t unusual in the North Country or Adirondack region, which sits near old fault lines that occasionally rumble to life.

While most people probably slept right through it, some late-night locals took to social media to say their windows rattled or their pets acted strange right before the shake hit.

How Strong was the Earthquake?

According to experts, here's the earthquake magnitude scale, and how each affects us.

  • 2.5 or less: Usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph
  • 2.5 to 5.4: Often felt, but only causes minor damage.
  • 5.5 to 6.0: Slight damage to buildings and other structures.
  • 6.1 to 6.9: This may cause a lot of damage in very populated areas.
