Tragic Crash in Cairo: State Police Release New Details After Patrol Vehicle Struck During Traffic Stop

State Police have released updated information following a tragic incident on Monday evening on Route 23 in the Town of Cairo. Our hearts go out to the family and everyone in the community grieving this loss.

According to the New York State Police, the crash happened on Monday afternoon, at approximately 5:23 p.m.

That's when, according to the report, two Troopers from the Catskill barracks were conducting a routine vehicle and traffic law stop on Route 23 when their patrol vehicle was struck from behind by another car.

Troopers Suffer Non-Life-Threatening Injuries

According to the report, the two Troopers were outside their patrol vehicle at the time of the impact. They suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. State Police say both were treated and released later that evening.

69-Year-Old Woman Died

The driver of the vehicle that struck the patrol car has been identified as 69-year-old Sharon L. Torres of Cairo. Tragically, Torres was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the New York State Police.

State Police say the incident remains under active investigation, and they are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact SP Middletown at 845-344-5300.
