How Does an AMBER Alert Work?

The AMBER Alert system started in 1996 after Amber Hagerman was kidnapped and murdered in Arlington, Texas.

An AMBER Alert is a broadcast emergency response that notifies the public when a child under 17 has been abducted and is in danger.

Law enforcement issues AMBER Alerts with information about the child and possible abductor. Alerts are broadcast on radio, TV, road signs, cellphones, and other devices.
