The torrential rain that swept through the Capital Region created dangerous flooding Wednesday morning, forcing numerous road closures and leaving some drivers stranded.

One of the most dramatic moments was captured live on CBS 6 as cameras rolled on Route 20 in Guilderland. See the video below.

According to the station, a driver went around police barricades that had been set up because floodwaters had made the roadway impassable. Moments later, the vehicle became trapped in what appeared to be several feet of water.

Live on the air, reporters narrated the tense scene as either the driver or a passenger climbed out of the vehicle, made his way to the back door, removed a child, and carefully carried the youngster through what had become a virtual lake to higher ground.

Thankfully, the child appeared to reach safety, but the frightening incident serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly flash flooding can become life-threatening.

If you encounter flooded roads or road closure signs, don't try to push through. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep away a vehicle, and conditions beneath the surface are impossible to judge.

Please give yourself extra time, obey road closures, and never risk your life—or your family's—to save a few minutes. No destination is worth gambling with your safety.
