Local High Schools Must Punt on Football ‘Til Spring
There will be no area high school football, volleyball or competitive cheer until the Spring after the New York State Public High School Athletic Association made the decision to pull the plug yesterday.
According to News Channel 13, the decision was made yesterday to cancel high school football, volleyball and competitive cheer.
New York's Public High School Athletic Association made the decision simply because the risks were too high. In a statement from the NYPHSAA press release, Julie Bergman, NYSPHSAA President explained, “The NYSPHSAA officers have determined it would be unrealistic to host football, volleyball and competitive cheer seasons this fall."
Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director added, “These are unprecedented times and unfortunately, difficult decisions will have to be made to address this ongoing crisis."
According to the NYSPHSAA , football, volleyball and competitive cheer fall seasons will be postponed until March 1, 2021. On March 1st, students may begin practice for football, volleyball and cheer.
As a result of the change to fall activities, things will be a bit different in the Spring. According to the NYSPHSAA, spring activities which were originally scheduled to start on March 15th, will be postponed until April 19th.
According to the press release, regular season games can begin this fall for "low and moderate risk fall sports". They include girls tennis, cross country, girls swimming/diving, boys soccer, girls soccer, and field hockey.
