Coxsackie-Athens Cancels Classes After Surge in Student Illness
One-Day Closure at CACSD
The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District announced a one-day school closure due to a sharp increase in illness across its buildings.
In a message posted to the district’s Facebook page, officials said schools will be closed on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, citing widespread reports of flu-like symptoms, fever, and a stomach bug among students and staff.

According to the Facebook page, the school reported that more than one-fifth of the district’s student body is absent, prompting administrators to take what they describe as a proactive step to protect the health and well-being of students, families, and staff. Parents and guardians are encouraged to check their email for additional information from the district.
A Coxsackie Health History Footnote
While not connected to the current illness outbreak, the village of Coxsackie does have a notable, if not particularly proud, place in medical history.
Coxsackievirus was named after the village where the virus was first isolated in 1947 by Gilbert Dalldorf during investigations into polio-like illnesses. As was common at the time, the virus was named for the location of its discovery, not because of any ongoing health issue tied to the community.
No Relation to Today's Illness
Health experts emphasize that the historical naming has no relation to today’s illnesses affecting local schools.
Families are encouraged to continue monitoring symptoms, keep sick children home, and follow guidance from school and healthcare officials as updates are shared.
