President Jimmy Carter Passes Away at 100
On December 29th, the sad news was delivered that our 39th President, Jimmy Carter, passed away.
James Earl Carter Jr., a peanut farmer from Georgia, became President of the USA from 1977 to 1981. He was the longest-lived president in U.S. history and the first to reach 100.
Thursday is National Day of Mourning
On December 30th, President Biden announced a day of mourning this Thursday for Americans to honor his service, life, and legacy.
“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance, ” Biden said the day after his passing.
What Will Be Closed on Thursday?
The Times Union reports that President Biden ordered “all executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed on Jan. 9,” except those necessary for “national security, defense, or other public need.” According to the Times Union, federal employees will still be paid for the day.
- The Postal Service will suspend mail delivery and close post offices, but there will still be limited package delivery service.
- The day of mourning will also impact Amazon deliveries delivered by the post office.
- National parks are generally open, but their administrative offices will be closed.
- The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed, as will the United States Supreme Court and other federal courts, along with the Library of Congress.
