A lake-effect snow warning is in effect for parts of central New York and some areas could see up to 3 feet of snow.

The New Year will kick off with snow for many in Upstate and Central New York. Some areas will see as little as an inch while some will see up to 3 feet.

National Weather Service Issues Winter Weather Alerts

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued several winter weather alerts for Central and Upstate New York.

The most impactful of these is a Lake Effect Snow Warning for areas of Central New York and the Western Adirondacks starting at 1 pm Wednesday through the weekend. Many areas could see a foot or more of snow with some smaller cells expected to get 2-4 feet. Heavy lake effect snow is expected with wind gusts up to 40 mph creating blowing & drifting snow.

While snowfall totals will be much smaller in eastern New York and the greater Capital Region, a wind advisory is in effect for the area from 3 pm Wednesday through 4 pm Thursday.
