New York State Police issued a warning Monday on their various social media platforms about shady scammers, calling random New Yorkers, pretending to be members of the NYSP PBA asking for money.

Here's how to prevent yourself or a loved one from being taken advantage of!

It's easy to see how some people might be fooled, these fakes are pretending to be members of the State Police PBA, an organization established in 2011 that represents approximately 1,200 members of the New York State Agency Police Services Units, including the UA Police, the NYS Environmental Conservation Police, the NYS Park Police, and the NYS Forest Rangers.

On Monday, the message from the State Police was clear: Don't give out your personal information or money to anyone who may contact you from a "607" area code.

"New York State Police are reminding the public that the New York State Police PBA does not solicit money by phone. Recently we have seen reports that someone from a “607” area code is contacting citizens and seeking donations. Anyone who receives one of these phone calls, do not give out your personal information and hang up." NYSP Facebook

It appears as though the 607 warning was a timely one from State Police.

In the comment section of the NYSP page, many people thanked the police for the heads-up, and one man, named Jack,  detailed a call from a scammer who tried this hustle on him,

"They called me last Thursday...(and)I hung up after 30 seconds. I still have their number on my phone...(and) Yes, from a 607!", he wrote.
