There may not be one company more important in the modern age than Meta. The company that started as Facebook has turned into the social media sphere itself, owning Instagram, Whatsapp, and more.

They've been heavily criticized for years over their impact on mental health and social media addiction. A settlement has finally been reached, and New York is getting a sizeable cut...

 Getting Paid

The settlement was spearheaded by New York State Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 32 other Attorney Generals from across the country. At the end of the settlement, they secured up to $17.1 billion to be paid to the states for reparations.

Anywhere between $819 million and $1.15 billion will be paid to New York State alone, with the funds being put into educational and mental health services for the youth. These services hope to undo the years of damage caused by social media addiction and prevent any future damage.

Meta is Changing

In addition to the payout, Meta has also agreed to make serious changes to their platform. The largest of which is age verification, that will allow them to know who is under the age of 18. Once that is determined, all those under that age will be limited to 2 hours a day on Facebook and Instagram (aside from messaging), and will be unable to access the platform between midnight and 6 a.m.

More changes will come, such as restricting age-inappropriate content from being shown to minors and disabling the algorithm entirely so they will only be shown content from their followers.
