Hungry Bears Are Waking Up Throughout New York State-What You Need To Know
Spring is here, and hungry black bears are waking up from hibernation! The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding residents of a few important rules to keep your family safe this spring.
Before plants start growing, bears are desperate for high-calorie food. If they find birdseed, garbage, or pet food in your yard, they’ll keep coming back, which can lead to trouble.
To keep bears away, follow these BearWise tips:
- Take down bird feeders and clean up spilled seeds.
- Store garbage in secure bins or a shed.
- Clean grills and smokers to remove grease and food scraps.
- Keep pet and livestock food indoors, and consider an electric fence if you have chickens or beehives.
- If you see a bear in the area, let your neighbors know so they can take precautions too.
Never feed or approach a bear it’s dangerous and illegal. Bears that become too comfortable around people can become a risk and may have to be removed.
A few small steps can help keep bears wild and neighborhoods safe. For more tips, visit the DEC website or BearWise.org.
