Costco Coming Soon To Albany-Will It Open This Year?
There has been a lot of controversy and red tape regarding the building of Costco near Crossgates Mall. It has been a long wait, but the Capital Region’s first Costco is finally taking shape.
After five years of planning, delays, and court battles, construction is now moving forward near Crossgates Mall. If all goes as planned, the massive warehouse store should be standing by the end of this year.
Costco has a loyal following, with more than 120 million members worldwide. It is famous for bulk deals, cheap gas, and those oversized carts that somehow end up filled to the brim. Many people in the Capital Region have been hoping that the hurdles would be cleared for quite some time.
Legal challenges over environmental concerns and traffic were filed, temporarily halting construction. Then came pandemic delays. Eventually, the lawsuits were dismissed, and the path was cleared to start building.
According to the Times Union, the store will sit just west of the mall and span about 163,000 square feet. While the structure should be complete by late 2025, the opening date is still a mystery. Crossgates’ owner, Pyramid Management Group, has hinted that the store probably will not open until sometime after 2025.
The site will also include a new cancer treatment center run by New York Oncology Hematology. That facility is expected to be ready by December 2026, bringing both retail and health services to the area.
Fingers crossed, we will have a Costco in the Capital Region sometime in 2026.
