Abused Dog Gets Warm Visit from Upstate NY Heroes Who Rescued Her
Badly Abused Dog Gets Heartwarming Visit
Thank you to the men and women of the Schenectady Police Department who rescued this sweet girl, and to the Humane Society that continues to care for her and advocate on her behalf for justice.
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society posted a sweet update on Lavender, the underweight dog who was found in early April with severe wounds to her face, and an ear that appeared to have been intentionally cut off.
According to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, Lavender, who continues to heal, got a very special visit last week from the kind first responders who helped save her life.
The MHHS said that Lavender was all about "tail wags and trust" as she met with members of the Schenectady Police Department, Schenectady Animal Control, and our own MHHS Humane Law Enforcement team.
"Thanks in no small part to an outpouring of support from our community, Lavender is receiving the medical care, safety, and compassion she needs to heal. From donations and fundraisers to words of encouragement, you’ve helped carry her through. She is healing." MHHS Facebook
If you have any information about Lavender’s case, don't hesitate to get in touch with the Schenectady Police Department Detective Division at 518-382-5245 or their Tips Line at 518-788-6566.
Schenectady Police Find Dog Badly Abused
Back in early April, the Schenectady Police reported that they received information from a city resident about a dog found on Eastern Parkway and McClellan Street in Schenectady the previous night.
Once the police arrived at the scene, officers reported finding the dog in a rough condition.
One Arrest Made
A few days after Lavender was rescued, the Schenectady Police arrested Basean D. Brooks, 31, of Schenectady.
Brooks, according to the police report, is accused of walking Lavender to the area of McClellan Street and Eastern Parkway and abandoning her while she was injured.
Brooks has been charged with a Class A Misdemeanor under NYS Agriculture and Markets Law, Article 26, Section 353.
According to the NYS Senate, the misdemeanor charges come when a "person overdrives, overloads, tortures, or cruelly beats or unjustifiably injures, maims, mutilates, or kills any animal, whether wild or tame, and whether belonging to himself or another, or deprives any animal of necessary sustenance, food, or drink."
The investigation into the case remained ongoing Friday, and detectives continued to seek information on what led to Lavender's injuries, police said.
Justice for Lavender
While Lavender continues to heal from her emotional and physical trauma, members of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society are raising money for her and other animals who have suffered neglect and abuse through a donation page on their website.
Here, in part, is what they wrote:
This sweet girl has suffered so much. Incredibly, Lavender has been friendly, gentle, and loving. Your gift will go directly to our Animal Cruelty Fund, helping support care and our push for justice for Lavender and other animals like her. Thank you for your generous support.
What To Do If You Witness Animal Cruelty
If you witness animal cruelty or believe an animal is in danger, report the matter immediately to local law enforcement and your local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or other humane enforcement agencies.

Over a decade ago, the Albany County Animal Abuser Registry was established by an act of the Albany County Legislature, known as Local Law K. The registry, hosted by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, is a public service.
The following people seen on this list have been convicted of animal cruelty. While it is unclear precisely what they are guilty of, one thing is clear: they are not allowed to own, possess, reside in, have custody of, or intentionally engage in physical contact with any animal.
Period.
