In a move that could finally provide answers to families waiting for news, the New York State Police will hold a press conference in western New York to deliver an update on a 2011 cold case investigation.

According to the report from the NYSP, information will also include the identification of human remains tied to that case.

Who Will Speak

The lineup for the media event includes:

  • Steuben County District Attorney Brooks Baker
  • Captain Kelly Swift, Troop E Bureau of Criminal Investigation
  • Lieutenant Joshua Greenman, Special Investigations Unit
    New York State Police

State Police say that following the opening remarks, a question-and-answer session will take place.

What We Know So Far

Despite the official announcement, details remain scant.  The State Police didn't mention the victim’s identity, cause of death, or investigative leads.

Because the authorities are using a “media advisory” rather than a full press release, they may be withholding certain information until the conference.

The case dates back 14 years, meaning that witnesses may have passed away, memories may have faded, and evidence may be fragile.

Capital Region Cold Cases

While it's unknown how many cold cases have been solved in New York in recent years, the Capital Region has several open homicide cases, with the oldest one dating back to 1959.

Authorities are still investigating these cases, but they remain unsolved.

News10 ABC recently highlighted the Capital Region’s oldest unsolved homicide cases, compiling details from the New York State Police.

We'll have more on this story after the SP updates the public on Wednesday.
