Looking for something to do this weekend? Head to Saratoga and take advantage of some great live entertainment when Steel Magnolias opens at the Saratoga Arts Center.

Jeremy Beuchner from the Local Actors Guild of Saratoga talks about the play based on the 1989 movie starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton.

Q: How close is the play to the movie?

A: The play is pretty close to the movie. Some of the famous scenes from the movie are in the play. The only difference is the play takes place in Truvy’s beauty shop and it only has the 6 main female characters from the movie.

Q: What is your favorite scene?

A: It’s hard to pick a favorite in this one. This is my 7th time working on the play version of Steel Magnolias. The obvious favorite which is a favorite to most people is the “funeral” scene where one character grabs another and yells “here hit this.” I’d have to say my favorite part of this show is not really a particular scene but the fact that I have an amazing cast. The woman playing M’lynn (the Sally Field role in the movie) is played by local comedic actress Mary Darcy, this is her first dramatic role and it is quite amazing to see someone who really only does comedy shine in her role.

Performances are Saturdays, February 1st & 8th 2pm & 8pm. Sundays, February 2nd & 9th 7:30pm at The Saratoga Arts Center, 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs NY 12866. Tickets are $15 general admission.
