Re-Imagined ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ Returning to Upstate NY
The last time The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus came to Upstate NY was back in January 2017, and many thought the popular brand would never be back.
At the time, the company was mired in controversy over its treatment of animals, ticket sales were sluggish, and the traveling band of circus performers, animals, and daredevils was basically doing a farewell tour after 146 years in business.
Less than 10 years after The Ringling Brothers closed the big top for good, they're back with a newly imagined version of the show promising all of the excitement, without any of the controversies.
For years, trained animals were a big part of the show despite drawing ire from animal activists and audiences, but that's no longer the case.
Nowadays, there aren't live elephants, tigers, or any kind of wildlife in their new, re-branded version of the Ringling Brothers Circus. Instead, promotors on their website are promising fans of the circus can expect something different - and hopefully just as exciting.
"You can expect to experience the unexpected. You’ll witness daring, never-before-seen acts on a highwire, trapeze, bicycle, and much, much more" it claims on its website.
Adding that fans should "stay tuned for real performer stories and get ready for a thrilling spectacle unlike any other. Your chance to Experience Real Wonder is coming soon!"
When is the return of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus to Upstate New York?
According to a report from CBS, The new Ringling team is in the process of holding auditions around the world, with hopes that the new crew can start rehearsing this summer. Then, in September 2023, the circus will embark on a 50-city tour across North America.
Show dates for some of the cities have been announced, but dates for many of the Northeast shows including stops in Albany and Buffalo haven't been announced yet.
