State Police Crack Down on Drivers

Ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend, the New York State Police announced that they would increase patrols statewide to target impaired and reckless driving, and the numbers show that it was a pretty eventful few days.

During the campaign, which the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee partially funded, State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and ticketed distracted drivers who used handheld electronic devices.

Over 12,000 Tickets Handed Out Statewide

On  Tuesday, the New York State Police issued a press release announcing that they issued 12,062 tickets statewide during the Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign.

According to the report, Troopers say they arrested 245 people for DWI and investigated 774 crashes, with three fatal crashes reported.

Last year, New York State Police issued nearly 11,000 tickets over the holiday weekend, about a thousand fewer than the 2025 campaign over the same 4-day period.

Breakdown of Tickets Issued

Over the holiday weekend, Troopers targeted speeding and aggressive drivers across the state as part of the enforcement

Below is the breakdown of the total tickets that were issued:

  • Speeding: 3,472
  • Distracted Driving: 393
  • Seatbelt violations: 1,660
  • Move Over Law: 225

In the Capital Region alone, State Police say they made 23 DWI Arrests, caught 312 speeders, 30 distracted drivers, 166 violated the seatbelt law, and 21 didn't obey the "Move Over Law" for 1078 tickets.
