New York Says, “Tuition Free Is the Way to Be!” – Do You Agree?
Hey New York, it looks like we're about to be the only station going tuition free!
So how could this affect you? Well, the Excelsior Scholarship, as they're calling it states that if you're a family that makes under $125,000 a year (which, um, is a lot of us, no?) then your student could be heading to a 4-year college tuition free!
The only catch I can see is that it needs to be one of the states public community colleges or pubic four-year universities - which, truly isn't that big of a catch considering the amazing schools we do have the privilege to be so close to home. Okay and you also have to maintain a specific grade point average, which kind of makes you say, "duh!" doesn't it?!
The proposed plan will go into place over the next three years in phases and will start as early as this fall for families that make $100,000 or less.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says via msn.com,
“There is no child who will go to sleep tonight and say, I have great dreams, but I don’t believe I’ll be able to get a college education because parents can’t afford it. With this program, every child will have the opportunity that education provides.”
So, now my question is - can we get retroactively reimbursed or no? I'm only sort of kidding because I have plenty of friends still paying off enormous amounts of student loans that, now students won't get stuck with. Do we just say, "oh well?" Or do we think that's the next idea to get passed?
