Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) out patrolling the frozen waters of Lake George were keeping an eye on fishermen to ensure they were following New York’s fishing regulations.

On March 9th, while ECOs Brassard and LaPoint were checking fishermen in an area known as “The Narrows” in the town of Bolton, they came across two men fishing for perch.

As they approached, the officers noticed a five-gallon bucket that seemed to be packed with more than the legal limit of fifty perch. After counting the fish, they confirmed that the bucket contained sixty-nine perch, nineteen over the limit.

The ECOs issued tickets to the fishermen responsible for exceeding the possession limit. In New York, fishing regulations are in place to protect fish populations and maintain a healthy ecosystem. Limits help prevent overfishing and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the sport.

This case serves as a reminder that while ice fishing is a popular winter activity on Lake George, it’s important to stay within the legal limits. Fishermen should always check New York’s fishing regulations before heading out to avoid fines and help preserve local fish populations.
