One of the great things about home ownership is you can do a lot on your own to improve your living space, and you can save money doing it. And that is just what my wife Stacy and I are doing as we get ready to put in our own kitchen!

The demo is the next fun step. But the first step in redoing our kitchen on our own was commiting to the project. And I'll be honest. This whole process scared me at first. My first thought when my wife and I talked about remodeling our kitchen on our own was 'This is going to be impossible.'

My biggest concern was getting the kitchen design right so we would be happy with it, and of course, cost and installation were high on my list too. And these fears have really subsided as we have gone through the design process and have seen our dream kitchen come to life.

The first big step to making this happen was finding the right design team. After looking into all of our options we decided to work with the great folks at Curtis Lumber in Ballston Spa. From the get-go, we have gotten one on one personalized service from Kerri, our personal design pro who has worked with us one on one to come up with the perfect kitchen.

The process started with seeing models and examples of different cabinets and countertops in the Curtis Lumber showroom.

We ultimately decided on Merrilat Cabinets and beautiful Cambria countertops. Both are great looking products with great construction that both fit into our budget! And most importantly, both will be custom designed to fit our kitchen. Once we finalized what we wanted, Kerri worked with us on the design which blew us away. Just look at the results below!

As you can see in the photos above, Kerri's knowledge and patience working with us to find the perfect design really led to the 'Oh wow' kitchen we were looking for. Every detail was adjustable and got tweaked to our heart's desire. We can wait to see this kitchen in our house!

Now, on to destroying some stuff with a sledgehammer!
