Shout-Out to the Houses Who Go All Out for Halloween

I'll admit something: I've never been the biggest Halloween guy. Getting dressed up? Nah, I'm good.

Trick-or-treating? Even when Brody was little, I could take it or leave it.

But one of life's simplest pleasures for me this time of year is driving around the Capital Region and seeing the houses where people have gone completely nuts for Halloween.

And honestly, I don't think it takes much.

The Great Center Square Albany Pumpkin

Across the street from where I live in Albany's Center Square, there's a giant glowing pumpkin in a window that has become somewhat famous in the neighborhood. It's nothing fancy, but it's simple and a little ridiculous.

And every year when it appears, it makes me happy.

Then there are the people who take things to an entirely different level.

When Brody was little, we couldn't drive past one house on Whitehall Road in Albany without stopping. They had these enormous Halloween Minions in the yard, and naturally, we had to get out for a closer look and a picture.

And around the corner from my parents' house on Fleetwood Avenue, there's a home that undergoes a complete transformation every Halloween.

The front yard becomes "Fleetwood Cemetery," complete with gravestones, skeletons, cobwebs, coffins, and enough creepy stuff that it looks better than some haunted attractions you actually pay to get into, and I love that.

Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's the creativity. Or maybe there's just something fun about ordinary houses suddenly becoming neighborhood landmarks for a few weeks every October.

And I know there are tons more throughout the Capital Region, and maybe a few of them bring you some joy.
