FDA Warns About 9 Potentially Fatal Hand Sanitizers

In an effort to get our hands on as much sanitizer as possible due to all things COVID-19, consumers are scooping up what is readily available. The FDA recently announced that there are 9 specific types of hand sanitizers that you should avoid immediately due to the toxic ingredient found in them.

According to News 10 ABC, the FDA issued a warning to consumers after it determined that 9 different sanitizing products contained the toxic ingredient methanol also known as "wood alcohol." According to the FDA, as of June 17th, Eskbiochem (the manufacturer of these products) has not removed them from store shelves.

According to the FDA, these are the 9 that could be toxic due to methanol:

All-Clean Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-002-01)
Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-007-01)
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-008-04)
Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-006-01)
The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-010-10)
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-005-03)
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-009-01)
CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol (NDC: 74589-003-01)
Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-001-01)

Exposure to methanol, according to the

FDA

can result in "nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death." The FDA also warns that while any and all exposure to methanol can be dangerous, it's especially toxic to children if accidentally ingested and adults who attempt to drink it as an alcohol substitute.
