It's that time of year when homeowners are looking at their driveways and realizing that they need new asphalt or for it to be paved. As a homeowner, I am in need of this too; however, here is some important information before you get it done. Don't get scammed.

As the weather warms up in Upstate New York, more scams come our way, especially involving asphalt or driveway paving. Local law enforcement is urging residents to stay alert as reports of suspicious door-to-door offers start to roll in.

Here’s how it usually plays out: someone shows up unannounced, saying they have leftover blacktop, stone, or millings from another job. They offer you a “great deal” if you act fast. It might sound tempting, especially if your driveway could use a little love, but it’s often a scam.

These people tend to use high-pressure tactics and unmarked trucks. They may rush you to make a quick decision, offer vague or no contracts, and sometimes even refuse to leave your property when questioned. Most importantly, they typically don’t have the proper permits to solicit work.

If someone shows up at your door offering paving work you didn’t ask for, it’s best to be skeptical. Ask questions, request written contracts, and never feel pressured to make an on-the-spot decision.

Always remember, if something feels off, trust your gut. Contact your local sheriff’s office to report suspicious behavior. Even if it doesn’t feel urgent, your report could help protect neighbors from falling victim to the same scam.
