Dog Dies of Hypothermia After Being Abandoned in Menands
Animal Left Outside of Shelter Dies
An Albany woman has been arrested following a heartbreaking case of animal abandonment in the Capital Region.
According to a report from CBS 6 News, a four-pound terrier mix was discovered outside the Mohawk-Hudson Humane Society on Monday. Investigators believe the dog had been left there without anyone inside being notified.
Tragically, the animal later died from hypothermia.
The CBS 6 News report states that the Albany County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brigitte Gaston, 62, charging her with one count of abandonment of animals, a misdemeanor. She was taken into custody on Tuesday and later released on an appearance ticket.

This is a devastating reminder that abandoning an animal, especially in extreme weather, can have fatal consequences.
What You Can Do
If you ever witness animal cruelty or believe an animal is in danger, don’t hesitate — report it immediately to local law enforcement, your local SPCA, or other humane agencies.
In 2010, the Albany County Legislature established the Animal Abuser Registry (Local Law K), which the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society manages. This registry was designed to protect animals and inform the public.
Why This Matters
The individuals listed in the registry have all been convicted of animal cruelty.
While the specific details of each case may not be available, the law is clear: They are prohibited from owning, possessing, residing with, or intentionally having physical contact with any animal.
