The county legislature has passed a law raising the age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 21.

According to News 10, anyone under 21 will no longer be able to purchase tobacco products in Albany Country after the legislature passed the law with a 24 to 13 vote. Lawmakers said 'it will be effective in reducing smoking rates within the younger population.' The American Heart Association was also a huge supporter of the new law, telling News 10 they have been pushing for the minimum age change for a year and a half.

As a non-smoker, part of me feels this is a great law as anything to discourage smoking is a good thing. On the other hand, I also feel once you turn 18 you should be able to make your own decisions, and smart enough to make wise ones on your own. This is another limitation on freedoms, regardless of the health consequences of smoking. Maybe it is protecting people somewhat, but it will also negatively affect those who casually enjoy a cigar or two here and there, in moderation.
