NY Snow Update: Latest Forecast Says Some Areas Could See Up to 2 Feet
January has brought a steady stream of snowfalls to the Capital Region, and this weekend could bring the biggest storm of them all.
Winter Storm Warning Issued For Capital Region & Upstate New York
Not only is it dangerously cold this weekend, but the National Weather Service (NWS) has also issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Capital Region and Upstate New York from 7 am this Sunday, January 25th, through 7 pm Monday, January 26th. Simply put, we have some heavy snow on the way.
First, let's start with the timing of this storm. The National Weather Service says we can expect the snow to start falling at the following times across the region:
NWS says the heaviest and most consistent snow will fall Sunday afternoon into the evening, with rates of 1 inch per hour, and 2 to 3 inches per hour possible in some heavier bands. Snow will start to lighten up on Monday morning and will taper off in the afternoon. Travel will be difficult during this storm with very low visibility, and all that snow will make a mess of the Monday morning and evening commutes.
While the cold and snow do make for a dangerous situation, one positive is that the combination will create light, fluffy snow,w which will be easy to clear. But, in turn, creates the potential for heavy snow drifts.

The current New Channel 13 First Warning forecast says we can expect highs of only 8 degrees on Saturday and 13 degrees on Sunday, and the weather pattern should get more favorable on Tuesday with a mix of sun and clouds and highs around 20.
Capital Region Snowfall Predictions
So, how much snow are we going to get? The latest snowfall predictions from the NWS below call for 12 to 18 inches of snow across most of the Capital Region and Upstate New York, with up to 2 feet of snow possible at higher elevations in the Catskills, Southern Vermont, and Western Massachusetts.
There are already widespread closings and cancellations throughout the Capital Region due to this storm, and you can find an updated list of those at this link:
