Forecasters are predicting a potentially mild and wet winter. But what are they predicting as far as far as snowfall?

At this point of the game, predicting any winter weather pattern is hit or miss.

We will call this your way too early forecast! But it is still fun to speculate on what lies ahead and what forecasters think will happen with the weather in Upstate New York.

Overall, the Farmers' Almanac forecast for the upcoming winter is not very foreboding.

In fact, it gives the impression this winter overall could be similar to the last winter here in the Capital Region and Upstate New York: milder than normal, and more sleet and freezing rain than snow. Overall precipitation this year is predicted to be above normal.

According to the National Weather Service, the average annual snowfall in Albany is 59.2 inches. Last winter, we fell well under that average with 31.8 inches of snow for the season.

Plus, last winter in Albany, we didn't have that one big storm, mostly just smaller snowfall totals across the season.

So are forecasters predicting any chance of some big snow for this coming winter?

Farmers' Almanac 'Red Flags' End Of January For 'Active Storm Track'

If we have any chance of some big snow makers, the Almanac says the back end of January could see the strongest potential for big snow.

Here is what their forecasters have to say"

We are “red flagging” the final week of January over most of the eastern half of the country because of a very active storm track that we expect will deliver frequent bouts of heavy precipitation, as well as strong and gusty winds. We would especially highlight the time frames from January 20 to 23 and 24 to 27, which could mean copious amounts of snow, rain, sleet, and ice (depending on where you live).

The storm activity will certainly be there at some point over the next few months. Hopefully, Old Man Winter brings the chill for some fresh powder across the region!
