Troy Searching Capital Region for Its Next Monument Square Christmas Tree
Already Thinking Bout Xmas...
It’s only September, but apparently it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas in the Collar City. And honestly, if there’s one place in the Capital Region that can get away with rushing the season a little, it might be Troy.
Downtown Troy during the holidays already looks like the setting for a Hallmark Christmas movie with its historic buildings, lights, shops, Monument Square, and thousands of people bundled up for the annual Victorian Stroll.
Troy Needs a Tree
The City of Troy recently put out a call on social media, searching for a large, full Christmas tree to become the centerpiece of Monument Square and this year’s holiday celebrations.

And yes, somewhere out there is a perfectly healthy, beautiful tree that may soon be living its final days in somebody’s yard.
Normally, I struggle with this concept. Cutting down a gorgeous tree just so it can spend a few weeks decorated somewhere else feels a little like sending your favorite family member away on a very festive rental agreement.

We're Giving Troy a Pass
At least this tree stays local, where thousands of our neighbors can enjoy it as part of one of the Capital Region’s great holiday traditions.
This year marks the 43rd Troy Victorian Stroll, an event that brings tens of thousands of people downtown for shopping, entertainment, lights, and all the old-fashioned Christmas charm Troy does so well.
If you have a potential Monument Square Christmas tree on your property, the city says it will coordinate the evaluation, removal, transportation, and installation of the selected tree.

Basically, you provide the tree, and the City of Troy handles the lumberjack stuff. Interested tree owners can contact the Troy Mayor’s Office at mayorsoffice@troyny.gov or 518-279-7156.
In the meantime, somewhere in Troy right now, there’s a tree enjoying the final few weeks of a perfectly normal life.
It just doesn’t know it’s about to become a Christmas celebrity.
