According to RentCafe the cost of living in New York is 26% higher than the national average. But that data is heavily skewed by the cost of living in New York City.
When you get outside the city, the cost of living in the Capital Region and Upstate is favorable in many areas versus national and state averages. And there is a huge difference when it comes to housing, which is typically the biggest expense in any budget.
Bankrate says the median home price nationwide is $404,500 and $522,000 in New York. The cities and towns on this list fall well below both of these averages.
