Having grown up in the city of Mechanicville and now living there with my family, Family Day in Talmadge Park was always a big deal. Although the past two years the day-long event had to be canceled because of COVID-19, it's making a strong return this year.

Family Day in Talmadge Park

This was one of those events that everyone in and around Mechanicville looked forward to each year. I can remember there would be bocce tournaments all day with trophies given out at the end. One year, my sister and a friend of ours beat the older ladies to win one. There were tons of people that would pack Talmadge Park to enjoy live music, craft booths, and delicious food. There was always a fried dough booth and the fried dough was enormous. Everyone would go and enjoy everything about the day with family and friends.

Alonzo Fireworks Were the Highlight of the Night

Mechanicville was the home of the world-renowned fireworks company Alonzo Fireworks. We were all proud of that. They were too. Each year at the culmination of Family Day, they would put on a jaw-dropping display. The fireworks show never disappointed. It rivaled the fireworks in Albany.

Mechanicville Family Day 2022

Fast forward to this weekend and Mechanicville will be holding its 45th annual Family Day in Talmadge Park on Saturday, July 9th. There will be awesome food, live entertainment, food booths, carnival rides, and of course fabulous fireworks. The festivities kick off at 8 am with breakfast and go on until about 10 pm after the extravagant fireworks show from Santora's who bought out Alonzo Fireworks. Although things are a bit different from when I was a kid, there is one thing that remains the same. Mechanicville is still an amazing community where everyone cares about each other and loves to celebrate.

This year's slogan for Mechanicville Family Day is, "You're never alone in Mechanicville." I couldn't agree more.

Abandoned Hoffman's Playland! Once Beloved Place Now Heartwrenching View

Hoffman's Playland was an amusement park in Latham from 1952 until 2014. Even though many of the rides were relocated to Huck Finn's Playland in Albany, Hoffman's holds a soft spot in many Capital Region families' hearts. Take a look at the now-abandoned Hoffman's Playland.
