How To Keep Pets Safe & Calm During 4th of July Celebrations

For many of us, the Fourth of July means backyard barbecues, fireworks, and time with family and friends. But while we're enjoying the celebration, our pets are often having a very different experience.

The loud booms, bright flashes, and extra activity can be stressful and even frightening for dogs and cats. If you've ever had a dog pacing around the house or a cat disappear under the bed when fireworks start, you know just how overwhelming it can be for them.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping your pets feel safe and comfortable. Experts recommend keeping pets indoors in a cool, quiet area of your home.

Air conditioning can help keep them comfortable, and closing windows and curtains can reduce some of the noise and flashing lights. You can also turn on the television, a fan, or calming music to help drown out the sounds outside.

If your pet needs to go outdoors, make sure your yard is secure. Scared animals can do surprising things when they panic, including jumping fences or slipping through small openings.

It's also a good idea to check that your pet's ID tags are attached and that any microchip information is up to date.

Be careful with party foods and other items left within reach. Foods like grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and sugar-free gum can be harmful to pets. Pool chemicals and other outdoor products can also pose risks.
