Public Domain is a very weird thing. It essentially covers all creative materials whos copyright has run out, meaning anyone can do whatever they want with the intellectual property, without having to pay out copyright.

As much of the early 20th Century's most popular characters enter this domain, we've seen some very odd adaptations of beloved characters.

Popeye the Slayer Man

In 2025, Popeye the Sailor Man entered the public domain. This meant, no matter what someone wanted to do with the character, they had the legal right to do so. A trend began with a lot of these characters entering the public domain, where directors would instantly make them the centerpiece for a B-Film horror movie.

Three of those movies centering Popeye released in 2025: Popeye's Revenge, Shiver Me Timbers, and Popeye the Slayer Man, the last of which takes place in Upstate New York (the main character is a SUNY Oneonta student).

Popeye Returns

Only a year after his blood-soaked theatrical debut, Popeye the Slayer Man returns to the big screen. A sequel is in the works, and will once again take place in Upstate New York. We don't know where yet, but it's been confirmed that filming will begin somewhere Upstate.

The film will feature Daniel Baldwin, brother of Alec Baldwin, and Avaryana Rose, best known for her work in The Caretaker. Baldwin will play the mayor of a town being terrorized by the titular "Popeye the Slayer Man" after he consumes contaminated spinach that turns him into a killing machine.
