Slow Down & Move Over: New York State Troopers Out In Force
The New York State Police are conducting their annual Speed Week traffic enforcement effort. It runs through Sunday, June 15th. The focus is on stopping speeding and aggressive driving before it leads to serious accidents.
Troopers will be out in force across the state, especially along highways. They’ll also be watching closely for drivers who ignore New York’s “Move Over” Law. That law requires you to slow down and switch lanes when you see emergency or hazard vehicles on the shoulder.
This year’s campaign hits especially hard after a recent scary incident. A New York State Trooper was hurt when a tractor-trailer cab hit them during a traffic stop on the Thruway. It’s a powerful reminder that traffic stops are never routine, and that even one careless driver can change lives in an instant.

Police say speeding plays a role in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes in the state. It’s one of the top contributors to deadly accidents, and they’re working to cut that number down.
To help catch violators, troopers will be using both marked patrol cars and special unmarked vehicles called CITE cars. It stands for Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles. These blend in with regular traffic but can light up instantly when an officer needs to act.
Last year during Speed Week, troopers handed out more than 22,000 tickets. That included over 11,000 for speeding and nearly 600 for drivers who failed to move over.
The message is simple: slow down, move over, and drive like lives depend on it. Because they do.
