No Dough! Iconic Pizza Brand Shuts Down 4 Places in Upstate NY
Pizza Hut vs Domino's
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, in the midst of cola, beer, and arcade game wars, two pizza giants engaged in a battle for the almighty American dollar; Pizza Hut, and Domino's. And while it's debatable as far as who had the better run (or better pizza), both franchises, even today, remain two of the giants in the fast food industry.
Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Over the years, both Domino's and Pizza Hut had their share of ups and downs, and back in 2020, Yum Brands - the parent company of the Pizza Hut franchise - filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
According to sources, the Yum company operates more than 1,200 Pizza Huts and nearly 400 Wendy’s restaurants, and analysts said the franchise could lose up to $54.2 million of annualized royalty revenue.
Closed in the Capital Region
It's taken a few years, but now we're seeing the effects in our area as news spread that more Pizza Hut restaurants in the Capital Region closed their doors for good on Thursday.
The 4 Pizza Hut locations in the Capital Region that are now closed include:
- Pizza Hut in Cobleskill, at 109 Barnerville Road
- Pizza Hut in Johnstown, at Route 30A, Johnstown Mall
- Pizza Hut in Amsterdam, at 4822 Route 30
- The Pizza Gloversville, 195 2nd Avenue
According to News 10 ABC, the former Johnstown Pizza Hut may become the new site for 7 Brew Coffee, an Arkansas-based drive-thru coffee chain.
The news station said that plans were reviewed at a City of Johnstown Planning Board meeting on July 5.
