Rare Moose Sighting Just Outside Albany

They’re often called the “unicorns of the Adirondacks," majestic, elusive, and almost mythical in their rarity.

According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, between 400 and 700 moose live in the Adirondacks, but seeing one in person is like winning the wildlife lottery.

That’s why it caused such a stir when a moose was spotted just 25 miles outside of Albany at Wertman Farms in Schaghticoke.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Sight

Wertman Farms shared a video of the unexpected visitor on their Facebook page, and the comments poured in:

  • “Thanks for sharing! I hope Sir Bullwinkle enjoys his tour de Schaghticoke and surrounding areas and feels like calling out.” - Brandy Blanck
  • “Love it… Someone posted a pic over in Hemstreet Park (woods). Thanks for sharing it." - Pam Hansen
  • “Wow, he had to hike a ways to get here, didn’t he?? He’s huge, so cool!!!” - Jodi Coleman.

Check out the video shared by the crew over at Wertman Farms.

From “so cool” to “beautiful!”, the excitement was unanimous. After all, it’s not every day you look out your window in the Capital Region and see a moose wandering near the greenhouses.

Have You Ever Seen a Moose in New York?

I’ve never been lucky enough to spot one myself, although I’m always watching the treeline.  But plenty of New Yorkers have stories to tell. If you’ve ever had your own moose encounter in the Adirondacks (or closer to home), you know it’s something you don’t forget.
