How to Keep Pets Safe and Calm During Fourth of July Celebrations
Fireworks, food, fun, the Fourth of July can be a blast for us, but for pets, it’s often a completely different story.
The loud bangs and flashing lights that come with fireworks can be terrifying for animals. If you’ve ever watched your dog shake or your cat bolt under the bed, you know how unsettling it is for them.
That’s why it’s so important to think ahead and make a plan to keep your furry family members calm and safe. First, try to keep them inside in a quiet, cool spot. The A/C helps with the heat, and being indoors muffles the noise. Turning on the TV or some calming music can also help distract them from what’s happening outside.
Make sure your yard is secure if your pet needs to go out. Frightened animals have been known to jump fences or squeeze through gates when they panic. Keep ID tags on their collars and double-check that their microchip info is current, just in case they run off.
And be mindful of what’s within reach. Some common party foods are toxic to pets, including grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and even gum. Pool chemicals can also be dangerous if left out.
The best thing you can do? Give your pet a safe zone, lots of reassurance, and skip the fireworks if you can. A little extra care can make a big difference on a very loud night.
