Hundreds Getting Pink Slips At Malta Plant
The Malta complex opened back in 2009 bringing over three thousand jobs to the area. Now the company is cutting their workforce and hundreds of jobs are being eliminated in Malta and Albany. When GlobalFoundries built their complex in Malta, they brought 3,300 local jobs to the area. According to News Channel 13, four hundred and twenty four jobs are being eliminated at the Malta plant and thirty one will be laid off at the University of Albany facility.
The company said that they need to switch their focus from technology to research in order to compete in the worldwide market. This is why they are laying off so many in our area. Local politicians are concerned with the Malta economy with so many being let go. Residents are also concerned with their neighbors who are going to lose their jobs due to the cut backs.
Layoffs are expected to begin the week after Thanksgiving around November 28th.
