Huge Smoke Alarm Recall

A possible malfunction is causing a recall of hundreds of thousands of a popular brand of smoke alarms.  Smoke alarm manufacturer Kidde is recalling 452,000 of them because of a risk that they won't warn you in case of a fire in your home. The "dual sensor" alarm has an issue with a yellow cap that had been left on during the manufacturing process. This can cover one of the two sensors and not trigger the alarm properly.

The Kidde smoke alarms being recalled were sold at Walmart, Home Depot, and other home and hardware stores. They were also sold online on Amazon and other websites. They were sold between the dates of September 2016 through January 2018 for twenty and forty dollars.

You are encouraged to remove the smoke alarm if you think it may be part of the recall and inspect it. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that you should not take the detector apart or remove the cap yourself.

If yours does not contain the yellow cap, you can re-install the smoke alarm and yours is okay. If you do have one with a yellow cap, immediately contact Kidde for a free replacement.
